Something “ain’t” right about this…

johnson cop kill lyrics

When a rap he wrote as a teenager ended up on MySpace years later, Antavio Johnson found the police at his door—and now, he’s been sentenced to two years’ hard time for a song lyric.  Soon after Harvard’s Henry Louis Gates was arrested after mouthing off to the police, charges of disorderly conduct against the feisty African-American professor were dropped like a hot potato in a firestorm of racial controversy. But consider the fate another African-American signifier who mouthed off to the police—this one, a hot-headed 20-year-old who, two weeks ago, was handed a two-year prison sentence for some rap lyrics he wrote when he was a teenager.  Click here: http://www.thedailybeast.com/blogs-and-stories/2009-08-08/does-this-kid-deserve-2-years-for-rap-lyrics/ for the full story.

There are indeed a few things this kid did wrong, no denying that, but 2 years in jail seems a bit harsh to me (for his actions).  While this is like comparing apples to oranges (to a degree), just a few days ago during the President’s Town Hall Meeting, a jerk showed up with a loaded gun outside of those activities to protest, and nothing happened to him except for getting interviews on Faux News Channel and MSNBC.  I think what that “gun carrying guy” did by his actions, was far worse than some wise ass kid using poor judgement by the words  he spoke as a teenager.  The gun toting man had the potential to assassinate President Obama right there on the spot (in my opinion)!  (Thanks SunnyC for sending in the corrections for clarification on the ending of this post!  You know we appreciate that!)

When you all read the full story, you’ll read that the author of the article shares information that happened with her 12 year old son.  Essentially, it was the same type of action, but the punishment in that case was “a $400 fine and a tongue lashing”.  To me, this speaks to the clear racism that seems to be more prevelant than it’s ever been since the late 60’s and 70’s in this country.  This Black President of ours, is forcing the covert racists to come out in droves!  Only in America!!!

  1. I read about this a few weeks ago. I think it is a shame this kid’s life gets ruined because he could not afford a descent legal defense team. I’ve listened to the rap, and I don’t think it would encite violence against “law enforcement” officers or anyone else for that matter, any more so than Birth of a Nation would inspire whites to go out and murder innocent African Americans…..Or, would it? There is definitely a double standard here. http://www.filmsite.org/birt.html

    • Thank you Nico for your reply on this! I (obviously) could not have posted THIS question better: “I don’t think it would encite violence against “law enforcement” officers or anyone else for that matter, any more so than [the] Birth of a Nation would inspire whites to go out and murder innocent African Americans…..Or, would it?”

This issue for A. Johnson, is sort of “tricky” to respond to (I recognize that), but there is still this underlying message that this incident sends forth, you dig?! It’s a damn shame on ever side of this discussion/debate. Man– at this point I will only say: “Only in Amerika”. Some places in the world actually do embrace and welcome Black folks and the same treatment is applied to ALL who violate the laws– and race has nothing to do with it (that’s clear)! This one, although somewhat subtle, does have this hint of race attached to it (in the U.S.A). Thanks again for chiming in and checking us out! We really appreciate it, and welcome to our lil’ Family! Peace!!!!

P.S. I will be searching for some Prince to post under our music postings in coming weeks! love that pic, man! 🙂 I was just listening to Lovesexy a few weeks ago! BIG azz 🙂
