Higher minimum wage coming soon

Federal wage floor will rise to $7.25 an hour on July 24. Hike will be felt in 29 states. Can the job market handle it?

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) — The federal minimum wage is set to increase later this month as the job market shows signs of further decay.  The federal minimum wage will go to $7.25 an hour on July 24 from its current level of $6.55, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.  The impact will be felt in 29 states, and many of them plan to match the federal minimum when it goes through.  Further down in the article it states; “For a family to survive on $22,000, it’s impossible,” said Matt Goldberg, a staff attorney at the Legal Aid Center-Employment Law Center, an organization that advocates for low income workers. “A minimum wage job might technically keep you above the poverty line. But the practical reality is that anyone trying to survive on minimum wage is in real, real dire straights.”  At least Matt Goldberg sees the lunacy of this ‘effort’… so let me further say…

Okay… is it me or is it outrageous that the minimum wage is set at such a low rate after all of this time?  Seriously, who can actually live off of this?  In New York (for example) this might pay for a refrigerator box for shelter and you can only afford to drink your own piss and eat a few crackers each month!  This is a joke Obama!!  Follow this link for the full pathetic story: http://money.cnn.com/2009/07/06/news/economy/minimum_wage/index.htm?postversion=2009070704

  1. I don’t know if the economy can handle this raise, when so many people are being laid off customer service(read: minimum wage) jobs. I won’t get mad at Obama because that wage was low (very) before he got here. Truth is no one can live off of this, but there are people who do work these jobs unfortuantely. What choice is there at the end of the day when you have been pounding the pavement looking for more suitable work, but at the end of the day you gotta bring home something, anything? The reality from my eyes (watching people who do work these jobs) is that this is not their only job; sometimes it is a second and/ or a third job. Then there are positions where your base salary is minimum wage but you are making money off of your tips; e.g. the bellman at my job (who are just lucky) but I digress. I got a text message from a friend telling me that the Jack n Box he was at, had an automatic cashier. The first time either of us had heard of this. You walk up to the computer and click on what you want. Then swipe your cc card or feed in your money, and you’re done. So it makes you wonder, what about the cashiers who are making minimum wage? Their jobs may be becoming obsolete.

    • Very good points, Janedoh! Excellent points as a matter of fact. And you are also right that this was happening long before Obama. I guess, I’m under the impression that the President can change anything and with the swipe of a pen… The Patriot Acts I and II come to mind when George Bush put those two in place “overnight”, while the country was out on Xmas break. “Jack n Box he was at, had an automatic cashier”— WOW! That’s new news to me. I’ve seen it happening a grocery stores, airline counters, rental car places, but I didn’t think this would happen in fast food. Sounds like this country is really in deeper poop that I first thought! *sighs, and shakes head– walks to kitchen to make mimosa*. Sips mimosa and sighs again! (smile)
